In 1976, Yamaha released the first of the CP series stage pianos. These 'electric grands' became instant classics with their authentic sound and live performance convenience. Thirty years later, Yamaha celebrates those milestone keyboards by unveiling the latest and greatest in the CP series: the new CP300. Drawing on their rich tradition and experience, this instrument gives the live performer all the sound and expressiveness of a superbly mic'd grand piano with the portability and versatility of a modern digital instrument. Feature:
The onboard sequencing, aka 'recording' feature is nice, but I wish they would have incorporated a Smart Card or a SCSI device. It'd be a lot easier to upload and download patches. Although it still has full MIDI capabiility, I cna't believe they didn't include an optical or TDIF/SPDF output. Even my Motif has an optical out. I haven't recorded anything on my AW4416 yet, so who knows-maybe it won't make much of a difference.
At first I thought the onboard speakers would be a little too hokey, even cheesy. But there's really no need to turn your amp, mixer and speakers on to play the P250. The built-in speakers sound surprisingly smooth, nicely balanced and very quiet. Playing by yourself there's more clean volume than you'll ever need.
Quality:
Fit and finish is excellent. It weighs a ton, so for gigs and jobbing I think I'll keep using my Alesis QS8. But, if you ever had a solo gig, man this is the one you'd buy the two-wheeler for-it'd be worth it.
Value:
You definitely get what you pay for here. No regrets.
Sound:
This thing'll make you weep! Its the closet you'll ever come to playing that Steinway of your dreams, without plunking down 30Gs.
Not only are the grand piano sounds chillingly realistic, it's got a ton of XG patches to boot. Just got mine (from Zzounds of course) so I haven't figured it all out yet. Tons of tones. It's tough for me to leave the house and go to work in the morning-I can't stop playing this thing. The EP patches are the real deal. These patches are the first ones I've ever heard that actually ARE a Wulitzer! Everybody has EP patches that always sound somewhere between a Rhodes, Wurlitzer and a DX7. If you've got em, this thing'll really bring back the memories!
Overall:
I've played everything. From Wurlitzers, to my CP70B grand, to Kurzweils and nothing duplicates the real grand sounds like the P250.

Feature:
This keyboard has all the features one expects when purchasing a keyboard for two reasons: key feel and piano sound.
Quality:
It weighs 100lbs, most of the case is metal. Looks very clean. Speakers are what you'd expect for their size, pretty good, but much better through separate monitors.
Value:
It's a bit expensive for what it is. Although I've played every other competitor and they really don't match up.
Desirability:
I lusted and then I purchased.
Sound:
This keyboard has the best piano sounds you're going to get separate from using a multiple gigabyte sample.
Overall:
If it was stolen, I would buy another one. It finally feels like I can put on headphones and play a piano. With a lot of keyboards it feels like you are playing a piano through an artificial interface. This has a very direct feel, as good as playing a real one can get. It makes me happy.
