Music is is a web of relationships, all measured in intervals. One of the most fundamental sets of relationships is the KEY. I just looked it up in an online dictionary, and it reads like this:
"A tonal system consisting of seven tones in fixed relationship to a tonic, having a characteristic key signature and being the structural foundation of the bulk of Western music; tonality"
To me, that's only part of it. Those seven tones mentioned, the notes of the major scale, are also the building blocks for seven chords. I go into some detail about their genesis here. Those related chords are the basis of just about every tune you've ever heard. Since there are 12 keys, they aren't named, they are numbered:
